First Week's Play

Today is the middle Sunday of the tournament and, with no matches taking place, the players and spectators can have a rest and reflect on the first week's play. So far there has been excellent tennis, fine weather, and a few shocks as highly rated players have unexpectedly crashed out. On the men's side, number three seed Novak Djokovic was defeated by Marat Safin and two-times finalist Andy Roddick also headed home prematurely. However, the last sixteen include the two top seeds Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal along with British number one, Andy Murray. Murray, although not expected to win the tournament, has been impressive with victories over Tommy Haas and Xavier Malisse.

The ladies also lost highly ranked players in number one seed Ana Ivanovic and previous winner Maria Sharapova seeded three. This opens up the possibility of a Williams' sisters final and that's a prospect that may lack interest, entertainment, and even, as some are suggesting, competitiveness.

Djokovic doubts Federer

Novak Djokovic, Wimbledon number 3 seed believes that Roger Federer, favourite for the title, is vulnerable in this year's event.

Federer has suffered a couple of losses recently and Djokovic feels that the champion is concerned over his form. Djokovic, the new Australian Open title holder, beat Federer in the semi-finals on the way to that title. At Roland Garros recently Federer could only win 4 games when he was trounced by Rafael Nadal in the French Open.

Federer is still clear favourite with the bookies and is currently available at 6/5 with Betfair. Djokovic is priced at 11/2.

Sampras competes in London

Wimbledon tennis legend, Pete Sampras will compete in the BlackRock Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall in London in December.

He will face a field of fellow former World No.1’s, Grand Slam finalists and Davis Cup winners at this popular event.

Sampras is the holder of a record 14 career Grand Slam titles but he believes that he will lose that record to Wimbledon number one seed, Roger Federer. Federer is Sampras's favourite to win this year's Wimbledon title and make it six in a row for the Swiss.

Murray passes first test

British tennis number one Andy Murray has successfully got through his first tennis match since his recent thumb injury.

Winning an exhibition match on Tuesday has helped calmed any fears of his fitness ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday 23 June.

World number 40 Janko Tipsarevic was defeated in 3 sets at the Boodles Challenge (6-3 5-7 12-10).

Murray commented at the end that "It felt good, as I had not hit a ball for a few days" and that "I enjoyed it out there and managed to play some good tennis."

Federer favourite at SW19

Roger Federer is still the favourite in the Wimbledon tennis betting despite Rafael Nadal's recent sparkling form.

Although Roger Federer's form has been inconsistent in recent months his confidence was lifted by Sunday's victory at the Gerry Weber ATP Open in Halle. Rafael Nadal, victorious on grass at Queen's approaches Wimbledon on a high after adding the Artois success to a growing list of titles.

Despite Nadal's impressive form, it's Federer, the grass court master and 5 times winner, that the bookmakers have as favourite to take this year's title. Federer is currently at 5/4 with Nadal as second favourite at 45/17.

Murray fit for Wimbledon

British Wimbledon Tennis hopeful Andy Murray has declared himself fit for the Championships after a recent injury scare.

After retiring hurt from the recent Queens club tennis tournament to protect his Wimbledon Tennis chances Murray is convinced it was the right thing to do and is now expecting to be fully fit.

Just before Wimbledon starts he has a chance to test his fitness out with an exhibition tennis match planned for Tuesday.

Murray Needs Tennis Partner

The defending mixed doubles tennis champion Jamie Murray is searching a new partner for this years Wimbledon tennis championships.

Jelena Jankovic has decided to only compete in the Womens tennis singles for 2008 due to an injury she picked up at the recent French Open.

Last year the couple ran out three set winners (6-4, 3-6, 6-1)

Speculation is currently linking Jamie with Liezl Huber of South Africa.

Nadal triumphant at Queen's

French Open title holder Rafael Nadal triumphed over Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2008 Artois Championships today.

Prior to today's contest the Spaniard Nadal held an 8-3 lead in their head-to-head matches but this was only their second ever meeting on grass. Their first meeting at last year's Wimbledon was inconclusive as the Serbian Djokovic had to retire through injury.

The first set ended in a tie-break when Nadal managed to claw his way back after a shaky start to the set. The pulsating set decider finished 8-6 to the Spaniard and put him in the driving seat. After going 2 games up in the second set it looked as if Nadal might go on to an easy win but Djokovic had other ideas and rallied to pull things back. Both players produced brilliant tennis in the nail-biting set until Nadal finally won 7-5.

Nadal's 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 victory means he is the first Spanish player to win a grass court title since 1972. He is also the first player to win the French Open and the Queen's titles in the same year since 1979.

Federer takes Halle title

Switzerland's Roger Federer added another victory to his tally to make it 59 matches unbeaten on grass as he overcame Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Gerry Weber ATP Open in Halle.

Kohlschreibe, who knocked out the second seed James Blake put up a valiant effort but Federer was in good form and eventually won convincingly 6-3 6-4. This win sets up Federer nicely going in to Wimbledon and is a welcome boost to his confidence after losing comprehensively to Rafael Nadal in the French Open.

Nadal into Queen's final

Top seed Rafeal Nadal overcame a tough opponent in American Andy Roddick to set up an encounter with Novak Djokovic in today's Queen's final.

Roddick, the 2007 tournament champion, was attempting to win Queen's for a record fifth time but could not stop the in-form Spaniard. Roddick made Nadal work hard at times whereas Djokovic had an easier passage through to today's final as he quickly dispatched David Nalbandian 6-1 6-0. Nalbandian provided little resistance as the second seed swept him aside on his way to a comfortable victory in just 47 minutes.

Halle final for Federer

Roger Federer progressed through to Sunday's final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle with a comprehensive victory over unseeded Nicolas Kiefer.

Federer's 6-1 6-4 win sets up a meeting with Philipp Kohlschreiber. Kohlschreiber, ranked 24 in the world, defeated James Blake 6-3 7-5.

Kohlschreiber will have a tough task on his hands to overcome Federer who has now increased his unbeaten run on grass to 58 matches.

Murray Injury Worry

Andy Murray has injury concerns ahead of Wimbledon, after having to pull out of the Queens club tournament yesterday.

He sustained a thumb injury in his previous match against Gulbis earlier in the week and this was the main reason for him having to call short his time at Queens club during his quarter final match against Andy Roddick.

Happily he remains confident he will be ok and ready for Wimbledon, saying that one of the reasons he called short his game was to make sure he did not make the injury any worse.

If you fancy a bet, Andy is currently 16/1 to lift the tennis championships with most major bookmakers, the current favourite is not suprisingly Roger Federer.
