Wimbledon Tennis Travel Overview

Wimbledon has been playing host to the finest tennis players and huge crowds of spectators for many years. The tournament has well-established transport links to make travel to the event as straight-forward as possible for tennis fans. However, road traffic congestion in the Wimbledon area is inevitable during the tournament fortnight and therefore the authorities recommend public transport for travel to the Championships. There is a choice of tube, train, bus and tram services to get you there.

Wimbledon Tennis Hotels

You can make travel to the tournament as quick and easy as possible by staying in accommodation close to the event. There are over 500 hotels of differing grades and prices to choose from within a 10 mile radius of Centre Court. With such a vast choice there's bound to be a hotel to fit your budget whether you plan to stay for just one night or for the whole Wimbledon fortnight. Those hotels nearest to the Championships are likely to fill up first so it's advisable to book early to avoid disappointment.

Public Transport to Wimbledon

Public transport is recommended for travel to Wimbledon and there are tube, train, bus, and tram options. If you are a UK resident intending to make several trips in London by underground or bus then consider getting an Oyster Card as it's free, convenient, and most importantly, saves you money!

Tube

The most convenient tube station for Wimbledon is Southfields on the District Line. Taxis and a frequent shuttle bus service operate from the station to the Championships throughout the day and into late evening. Travelcards and bus passes are not valid on the shuttle service. Walking to the tennis from Southfields should take around 15 minutes and is often quicker than waiting for the bus.

Train

South West Trains operate regular rail services from London Waterloo into Wimbledon Station. Long distance trains also stop at Wimbledon Station between 10 am and 12.30 pm and between 7.00 pm and 9 pm. Taxis and a shuttle bus service run frequently from here to the All England Club.

Bus

A direct bus service is operated by London General to the Championships every 30 minutes from Marble Arch, Hyde Park Corner, and Victoria. The shuttle bus services from Southfields underground station and Wimbledon Station are also run by London General.

Tram

A regular tram service runs from East Croydon station to Wimbledon station. The journey takes around 25 minutes and it runs every 10-15 minutes during the day Monday to Friday. Early mornings, evenings, and on Sundays the service operates at 30 minute intervals.

Car

Travel to Wimbledon by car isn't advised but for some tennis spectators there may be no viable alternative. Be aware that on-street parking is not permitted in the vicinity of the Championships and offending vehicles will be removed. There is limited reserved parking in the official car parks so it's a case of getting there early.

A Park and Ride facility, located in Morden Park (SW4 5QU), is available at £15 per day including a free shuttle bus journey to the tournament. It is possible to pay on the day or book through the AA booking line on 01256 492110.

Traffic tends to be heavy in the Wimbledon area during the two weeks of the tournament so it's advisable to allow additional time for your journey.
